Chapter 1

To "be a man" doesn't mean in contrast with being a woman, as simple-minded people believe.

To be a man means in contrast with being a subhuman animal. It means to have an ethical structure. It means to be constructive. It means to control one's appetites and to pay one's debts. It means to communicate articulately and honestly. It means to be self-aware, and to be aware of some kind of Intelligent Being who is above us.
