Chapter 2

By now, it has to be admitted that the influence of the band Black Sabbath equals that of the Beatles. "Everyone knows" that the Beatles were the shockwave that started the whole modern rock band thing, but Black Sabbath invented, in one perfect move, Heavy Metal and the whole Goth esthetic that goes with it.

If you look at the vast majority of kids' bands now, they're heavy metal, looking all gothy in their black t-shirt uniforms. If you look at magazines that are written for guitar players, all you see is goth and metal guitarists. Heck, if you look at guitar company catalogs, it's often mostly metal and goth. Skulls everywhere.

The original 1969 Black Sabbath album single-handedly invented the vast majority of the esthetic that guides white kids in bands on the street now -- if you can call anything in the suburbs the street -- maybe we should call it the Drive or Lane or Vista.
