No matter how smart you are, with very rare exception you are only good at what you're good at. You could be a brilliant philosopher but hopeless at rebuilding a carburetor. The successful businessman who is a philosophical and moral numbskull is so common that it is a cultural cliche.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Some of my best friends are numbskulls.

Self-awareness would help keep people from getting involved where they don't belong; but awareness, too, is a specialized skill found in only a few people. Consequently, too many people are getting involved in things that they will only mess up.
