All Visionaries Are Crazy Department:
This is nuts but watch how it evolves over the years. Nutsy things actually do happen, and not infrequently. You heard it here first:
I saw today a short essay from George Will, making the point that Progressives want people to be riding light rail, fast rail, and sundry public transit because it will assist in making said people into passive members of a dependent herd:
"To progressives, the best thing about railroads is that people riding them are not in automobiles, which are subversive of the deference on which progressivism depends. Automobiles go hither and yon, wherever and whenever the driver desires, without timetables. Automobiles encourage people to think they -- unsupervised, untutored, and unscripted -- are masters of their fates."
I thought that this was a little crazy, until I heard on the news that the government is considering requiring that cameras be installed in all cars. I thought that that was crazy, too -- why do they continue and continue legislating more and more expensive complexity into cars? Are they trying to price them away from everybody's reach?
Well, maybe yeah. All things considered.
