Many standard objects are made in some standard length, say 36 inches or 48 inches. If you go to buy a box to ship some such thing, the boxes are 36 inches or 48 inches long.

That of course is unusable, because there is no clearance. Cardboard boxes are not precision devices, and the ones that run a little small will crash the merchandise. This is a problem if you're shipping something like a rolled-up $200 poster.

Hey Box Manufacturers:
Thirty-six-inch boxes should be 36.5" long. Forty-eight-inch boxes should be 48.5" long.
