I think that competence is largely a moral issue.

There is no real reason to be competent. A great many people don't bother with it. A shabby, flimsy new house sells just as well as a well-made one, if you can find a well-made one. A competent person chooses to be competent just because it's the right thing to do.

Granted, a few people will be motivated by admiration, and will do their best work to attain that admiration. Granted, their best work isn't necessarily guaranteed to be competently executed, but it'll be their best.
