Chapter 11

Lately people are saying that renting is usually better than owning a home.
What, are they nuts?

In the first place, if you rent you get three or four insect-infested, stuffy rooms; and you share with your dirty neighbors walls that are so thin that you can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell them.

If you buy you get a house. Two or three or four floors, no contact with anyone if you don't want, and real live space all around you. Nice space, too, with grass and trees and flowers and stuff.

For the same money. Plus if you buy, you get a whole bunch of it back when you leave. If you rent, you get nothing, and less than nothing because the landlord is going to make you pay for every imperfection that was there when you moved in.

"But if you rent you don't have property tax!"
What do you mean, you don't? Your landlord does, and where does that money come from? It comes from YOU, sucker, plus his markup.

"But if you rent you don't have maintenance expenses!"
What do you mean, you don't? Your landlord does, and where does that money come from? It comes from YOU, sucker, plus his markup.

If renting is so much better than owning, how come that the corporations who own the apartments that people rent become such huge financial empires?

**********

Renting makes sense if each minute of your life is so important that you need to hire people to wash your car and cook your food and do your laundry. If you can't do maintenance and don't care if you have a habitable home because you only sleep there and don't really care what it costs, renting is perfect.

It's not so much a home as it is a service.

Owning makes sense if you're planning on getting old, because once the house is paid for, all you have to cover is maintenance and tax. Your nonexistent investments and unlikely Social Security won't be having to make house payments. Your house is free.

Whereas if you rent you're on the hook for the full amount until you die, and you can forget about having a car or eating.

Rent even continues after you die, because the rent is still due until your stuff is taken away and the place is vacated. Maybe even until the year term is over.
