Why go to church?
For the same reason that it's good to have a separate environment like an office for your work or a gym for your workouts. It's good to have an environment that is designed to concentrate your attention on who you are and whether you're doing the right things every day. All you need to do is to find the right place -- but just staying home in your everyday environment is not it.
Simple people criticize religion because some of the legends and icons are silly. Well, some of them are.
Religion almost-arbitrarily personifies the mystery of whatever God is, and what's the problem with that? The average person might not be able to wrap his mind around the idea of some superior universal pervasive intelligence, let alone one that people can communicate with.
But, provide a Jesus and now you have a user interface. You got something against user interfaces?
