Chapter 15

* * * * * * * * * *

In the glory days of liberal racism, there were a few crazed people complaining about the pictures of Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben on their respective branded food packages. I guess they thought that pictures of black people, like pictures of Mohammed, should not be allowed.

Uncle Ben is fine, but if they got rid of the current fictional Aunt Jemima, that would be fine with me. She is Ug-Lee!!!

Bring back Hattie!* Besides being better-looking, she was historically correct, was she not?

I wonder, too, whether they made poor Jemima into such an unfortunate vision as a vengeful response to the detestable bullies who demanded that poor Hattie should die. I could see somebody doing that. I could see you or me doing that.

*I'm speaking of the Hattie McDaniel style picture of Aunt Jemima. The real Aunt Jemima actress in the 1920's and 1930's was Tess Gardella, an Italian-American blackface entertainer.
