Chapter 19

"Thank you"

"You're welcome"

People don't often say "You're welcome" any more. There's a clear reason why.

If you say "You're welcome", it signifies that you have substance. You have capital. You have existence and status as an individual human being, and you're literally welcoming one of your fellow human beings into your garden.

As an individual human being you have assets that you can choose to welcome someone to share, or not to welcome someone to share. You are a fully-fledged Human Being, with assets and value and worth.

The most common current modern response to "Thank you" is "no problem". What does that mean? That means "Life sucks but I can tolerate your imposition".

Obviously the person in the second instance ("no problem") is inferior to the person in the first instance ("you're welcome").

This whole thing is only one more instance in which people have been devolving from, well, people, into subhuman animals.
