I didn't have access to any smart grownups during my childhood, so I got suckered in by any person on TV who seemed to be smart or whose schtick was to be smart. I found Steve Allen intriguing, I found Dick Cavett intriguing.

Well, as it happens, Steve Allen was a Kardashian, famous for being famous and not much else. He wrote one song that anyone ever heard, he was featured on one TV show that became explosively popular -- after he left. He was a great self-promoter. But if you look behind the self-promotion, there was nothing there.

As for Dick Cavett, he acted smart but we don't know whether he really is. He is kind of odious, and especially so lately. "Being smart" was just a brand that he exploited.
