People somewhat know what engineers are but they don't know what technicians are. Technicians, good ones, have a knack, a feel for their work. A few nights ago I was listening to a new hi-fi speaker design. The vocals were too up front and a little harsh. I alligator-clipped a resistor onto the circuit and the vocals popped right back into place. Things like that.

And how about the guys who can take a sheet of metal and a hammer and make an object -- a car fender or a motorcycle tank -- with it? Normal people could never do something like that, to connect with their material, to be at one with their material, to shape the material at will.
