And, that brings to mind one of my "core values", as they say these days. If an employee does bad work or screws up, okay, people screw up some times. If the employee gives an excuse or believes that screwed-up is okay, he's gone. He's out of there. I'll fire him on the spot.

You can't have people who don't know or care that things are crummy, let alone actually want things to be crummy. It should be obvious that people like that will kill your business.
